From War Reporter to Royal Art

Willem van de Velde the Elder was no ordinary artist – he was a true “embedded journalist” who captured the Battle of Salisbury from aboard a Dutch ship. He later transformed his sketches into designs for monumental tapestries, commissioned by King Charles II. Every detail on these socks – from red flags to characteristic waves – is based on that centuries-old royal commission.

350 Years Later: From Museum to Sock Drawer

The Scheepvaartmuseum recently acquired these rare tapestries – the largest purchase in its history. The original artwork measures 6 by 3.3 metres and is a masterpiece of 17th-century craftsmanship. We have translated this monumental work into wearable art, so you can experience a piece of Dutch maritime history every day.
